Princess Anne High School is home to PA Bands and is an 18-time Virginia Honor Band with 10 of those years coming under the baton of band director John Boyd.  Known throughout the region for its famed marching band, the Fabulous Marching Cavaliers, Princess Anne has also built a reputation for its two concert programs (the Symphonic Band and the Wind Ensemble) as well as its jazz program (The Speed of Sound Big Band, the Showtime Big Band and the Hot Fedora Jazz Combo).  Additionally, every year since the spring of 2002 the band program hosts an annual concert series for area percussion ensembles and jazz bands call the Big Spring Jam, which features Princess Anne’s two percussion ensembles as well as it’s jazz ensembles.

John Boyd earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Jacksonville State University in Alabama in 1997.  He was hired as the Director of Bands at Henry E. Lackey High School in Indian Head, MD from 1997 - 2001 and has been the Director of Bands at Princess Anne since July of 2001.  He was the first band director at Princess Anne since the incomparable Ron Collins to annually take two bands to the VBODA District 2 Concert Assessment, and founded the Big Spring Jam Concert series as well as the Speed of Sound Big Band, the Showtime Big Band and the Dominion Storm Indoor Drum-line.  He is married to Mrs. Kelly Boyd, a PAHS 12th grade IB English and 11th  and 12th grade IB Theories of Knowledge teacher.  They have been blessed in life with their son Gabriel and daughter Shannon.

John Boyd is the Director of Bands at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, VA. A native of Southern Maryland (where he attended La Plata High School) he moved to Northern Virginia his senior year and graduated from Woodbridge High School in 1992, after which he attended Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama majoring in Music Education and graduating in May of 1997. His primary instrument was saxophone, but he also marched baritone and later tuba (Conn model 20-J) in the legendary Jacksonville State University "Marching Southerners".  While at Jacksonville he had the pleasure of marching in the 1996 "Macy's Parade" in New York City.

After college he was hired as Director of Bands at Henry E. Lackey High School in Indian Head, Maryland from August 1997 until June 2001. His first year at the school the Lackey Charger Marching Band earned a berth in the prestigious Tournament of Bands Atlantic Coast Championships for the first time in school history and returned there every year under his direction. He also founded the Showtime Big Band (the Lackey HS jazz band) and placed heavy emphasis upon the Concert and Symphonic Band programs -- with the Concert Band performing at the Maryland State Band Festival. He has been at Princess Anne High School since August 2001 directing the reincarnated Showtime Big Band, the Percussion Ensembles, the Symphonic Band, the Speed of Sound Big Band, the Wind Ensemble, and the famed Fabulous Marching Cavaliers. Mr. Boyd founded the Speed of Sound Big Band (the PA jazz ensemble) during his first year at Princess Anne as well as instituting the "Big Spring Jam" concert series for percussion ensembles and jazz ensembles. In December of 2007 he founded the Dominion Storm Indoor Drumline and was their Director in 2007 and 2008.  In January of 2013 he founded the Showtime Big Band (the PA "pep band") which instantly gained a celebrated status -- with its signature renditions of rocking-your-face-off songs like Dick Dale's "Miserlou" -- among the sports venues and fans of Hampton Roads basketball.

Princess Anne High School has been an active member of VBODA as well as regional marching band circuits (Tournament of Bands until the 2009 marching season, United States Scholastic Band Association until the 2013 marching season, and recently helping to forge the way for the new Virginia Marching Band Cooperative), and during Mr. Boyd's tenure at Princess Anne the band program has earned the distinction of "Virginia Honor Band" numerous times (2002-2003, 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2012-2013, 2014-2015, and 2015-2016), for their Superior-rated performances at both the VBODA State Marching Assessment in class 2A and the VBODA District II Concert Band Assessment on grade 6 literature. On Aprill 11, 2011, Kurt Williams of WTKR - TV3 presented Mr. Boyd with the "People Taking Action" Certificate and Pin at rehearsal for Band Aid 2: For the People of Japan.  The concert, organized by Boyd and conducted by John Brewington, raised over $5,000 for Peace Winds Japan as that nation and her people recovered from the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami.  Students from each Virginia Beach high school assembled on stage to present a stirring selection of challenging music in honor of Japan.
